We use the InBody machine to measure body composition, so members can track progress through changes in muscle mass and body fat %.
It's one of the more accurate body scanners available, but its readings shouldn't be taken as gospel — like any measuring tool, there are factors on the day that can influence the result.
Scans can cost up to £30 elsewhere; members get unlimited scans free as part of their membership. Simply download the InBody app and register — once you've completed your scan, scan the QR code on the machine and your results are logged automatically in the app.
Do not take an InBody test if you have a pacemaker or other electronic medical device implanted, or if you are pregnant.
How the InBody Scanner Works
The InBody uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) technology, measuring "total body water" by reading the impedance of low-level currents through the body. Because of this, short-term changes in your body can lead to short-term changes in your results — which is why a single snapshot scan doesn't always tell the full story.
Factors That Can Affect Your Results
Exercise
Weighing in before or after a workout changes the reading, especially body fat %. During exercise, water concentrates in the muscles being worked; afterwards, impedance drops and so does body fat — you'll look leaner straight after training.
Body temperature
Warmer skin temperature lowers body fat % readings, while a lower body temperature raises impedance and can show as less muscle, more fat. Sauna use and cold exposure can shift readings for a while after the fact, even once your temperature feels back to normal.
Showering or bathing
This increases blood flow and lowers impedance, so body fat % tends to read lower straight after.
Eating
Digestion lowers impedance, so the more you've eaten that day, the more it can distort the reading in front of you.
Toilet, clothing, and other factors
Clothing, and anything not yet passed as waste, doesn't conduct electricity and is read as fat mass — so a trip to the toilet beforehand will change your number.
Menstruation
Results can vary more for women across the cycle. Water retention in the luteal phase can lower body fat % readings, while cravings around this time may do the opposite. Where possible, it's best to scan during the follicular phase (day 1–14) for consistency.
Weight
For the most accurate reading: no clothes, fasted, and after using the toilet. That's rarely practical day to day — so just keep the factors above in mind, and focus on the overall trend rather than any single scan.
InBody FAQs
Is the InBody Scanner accurate?
Generally, yes — though hydration and body position can affect it. Following the instructions carefully and repeating scans under similar conditions gives the most reliable results.
How often should I use it?
That depends on your goals — anywhere from monthly to every few months for general tracking, or more often if you're actively working through a training or fat-loss programme.
Is it safe?
Yes, for most people. It uses a very low-level electrical current with no known long-term side effects.
Can anyone use it?
Almost everyone — though it's not recommended for pregnant women, anyone with an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker, or a history of epilepsy or seizures.
Do I need training to use it?
No — it's designed to be user-friendly. Just follow the on-screen instructions carefully for the most accurate reading.
How do I interpret my results?
You'll get a breakdown of body fat %, muscle mass and water distribution. Focus on whichever of those matters most for your goals, and consider talking it through with a trainer to build a plan around it.
